A few weeks ago we joined forces with Winning by Design. We started a 360 approach to level up everything from sales org, to processes, tool stack and of course our GTM market approach. (why? well spoiler #BANT, #MEDDIC all nice but not state of the art because they are #seller-centric and not #customer-centric. I recently completed the ‘Mastership in Revenue Architecture’ course and can’t begin to tell you how useful it has been. As a revenue professional, understanding the baseline models of the revenue machine is crucial for success, and too often we spend our time downloading the ‘software’ of sales success without really getting to understand the ‘operating system’ that everything runs on. This is where the Revenue Architecture model kicks in.

This isn’t a course on ‘how to sell’ or ‘where to find your ICP’ – this is a course that covers the fundamentals of GTM model design and execution, and I cannot recommend it highly enough. If you have chosen to build a career as a revenue professional, you should consider this course an update to your core OS.

Customer Success Leadership Training

What’s the secret to a strong recurring revenue program? According to Alia Pirani, Winning by Design’s Head of Learning for Customer Success, it’s making sure your customers understand what you’ve been able to accomplish together. “We take it for granted that customers are connecting the dots,” says Pirani. “Part of our role as customer success managers is to help them connect the dots. It’s not about telling them the impact they’ve gotten, it’s about helping them see it on their own.”

Pirani says that customers can be so excited to tackle a new problem that they forget what they have already accomplished. During an Impact Review — also known as a Quarterly Business Review or Executive Business Review — a top-notch customer success team should start by celebrating the impact that customers have already achieved. “Remind them of what the world looked like before they started using your product,” Pirani says. “It’s critical that they articulate the pain they were experiencing and the impact they’ve achieved.”

After that, the goal is to align on the impact that you’re going to achieve in the future. A customer might not always have a clear idea of what they want to achieve in the future. But a customer success manager can ask questions to help uncover new opportunities for their clients. “You’re able to say to your customer, ‘This is the vision I have for your company,’” she says. “’This is where I think we can take you.’ This really deepens the relationship you have with the customer and transforms you into a trusted advisor.”

It’s that last part — helping your customer understand how to solve their challenges — that’s the key to success in a recurring revenue company. If your team can earn the trust of their customers, you can be sure that you’ll develop a long-term relationship with them.
